I felt today was a pretty active day, so it was good to really feel exhausted at the end of the day. It was also a learning experience in terms of how to combine social events with my diet because, let's face it, social events nearly always include food. More on what I learned below:
Activity: Today I biked to and from work. Each way, it's a 13 minute ride, so that's 26 minutes total of activity. Later in the afternoon, I biked to Community Boating for some paddleboarding with my friend Miles. That's a 20 minute ride each way. So a total of 66 minutes spent bicycling - awesome!
It was a beautiful day outside, so it was great to get out and go paddleboarding on the Charles River. Miles and I easily spent an hour and a half out there. Later that evening, I realized just how much energy I had expended because I was EXHAUSTED. All in all, I'd say today was a great day for exercise.
Calories: Today was a weird one. I started off strong at breakfast with some granola and overnight oats. Later in the AM, my team at work had an end of quarter meeting. Apparently we had done so well that our Manager bought us brunch! First off - yay. I love brunch. But second - oh dear!! I've already had breakfast and 11am still seems way too early for lunch! I ended up having lots of fruit, a slice of french toast, and some scrambled eggs. My logic was that I could eat this now, and then listen to my stomach later when I felt hungry again. I think this put me a little over my desired calorie count for the day but I'd like to think I made up for it with my calorie deficit.
In the afternoon, I had an Amy's vegetarian hot pocket once I felt hungry again, then went paddleboarding. That evening, I met up with friends to watch Orange Is The New Black (OITNB), but was faced with another social situation and lots of food. Fortunately, Jobim and I stopped at Trader Joe's on our way over and I picked up a lot of veggies to bring over - snap peas, cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives, a bell pepper and some spinach. We ended up snacking on snap peas, salsa, and cherry tomatoes instead of chips which was great. Note to self - always bring veggies as an offering at social events. Even if no one else eats them, I certainly will!
I was so exhausted from paddleboarding that I was verging. Fortunately I filled up on veggies before eating too much pizza. I was also good about minimizing the amount of beer I drank (only one!) but I think a lot of this was due to being so exhausted. All in all I'm proud of the alternatives I found here.
Takeaway: While a couple hurdles were thrown my way, I'd like to think today was a success. I was very, very active (though my step count certainly doesn't agree!) and I found ways to address all the food that popped up over the course of my day. Also, I was way better at listening to my stomach than I usually am. Awesome!
