I love when a band I was really into 5 years ago comes back with a new album that just makes me love them even more. I remember listening to Vampaire Weekend's first album, "Vampire Weekend" first came out. I listened to it obsessively my freshman year of college, jamming in the basement lounge of the college radio station, canoodling with my recent fling.
Modern Vampires of the City is all of that and more. It has the upbeat exicted naivete of my freshman year, plus the nuance that naturally comes with time. They're experimenting more with acoustic layers, mixing in new and interesting sounds. Something that eventually cause "Vampire Weekend" to turn dusty on my CD rack (lol) was that my ears eventually got tired of the album's unfettered happiness. With Modern Vampires of the City, I'm not yet sure whether or not that's going to happen. It has just the right amount of bittersweet melancholy that develops with time; the side-effects of a seasoned ear. With those lows, however, come supreme highs. Those highs that stand out, and transform your experience and perception of the whole. The whole album feels like it's looking back in time with notsalgia - at times innocent and careless in the midst of the whole.
