Weekend Update: June 7th & 8th, 2014

I was pretty proud of this weekend's activities!  There were a number of social events but I worked very hard to be cognizant of my daily food budget despite all the offerings in front of me - that meant lots of delicious salad!  I also worked to incorporate exercise into my transporation - things like bicycling instead of driving or taking the T - made a huge difference in my activity levels.  But more on that below!

I felt today was a pretty active day, so it was good to really feel exhausted at the end of the day.  It was also a learning experience in terms of how to combine social events with my diet because, let's face it, social events nearly always include food.  More on what I learned below:

Man, not so great yesterday.  It's only marginally over my goals, but it's really amazing how small differences add up over the course of the day.  Today, it was rainy so I got a ride to work from Jobim - that means I didn't get my usual 17 minute walk from Kendall square to work in the AM.  I did, however, walk from work to the subway.

Activity: Again, less active today than I was yesterday.  I didn't go for a run and I didn't walk as much as I usually do.  This is definitely furthering my resolve to stand at my desk more often than I sit at it!! Tomorrow I'll plan on biking to work and then I'm paddleboarding with a friend after work.  Hopefully that should make up for it.

So, I've got a wedding coming up in April, at ~14 lbs to lose in between now and then.  Totally do-able!  It just involves a lot of re-thinking on my day to day.  I've started using FitBit, which has been immensely helpful in terms of measuring my own accountability and keeping track of my fitness goals.  I can keep track of how active I am, and even how many calories I consumed that day.

Simple Recipes: Toast and the perfect soft-boiled egg

Let's face it, it's been a really really really really really tough winter.  And tomorrow there's supposed to be even more snow.  If you're like me, the usual A.M. granola just isn't cutting it any more, and the very thought of eating something not hot chills your very bones.

Well, never fear, because today you're going to learn how to make the perfect toast and soft-boiled egg (even if you don't own a toaster!).  And you'll finish with time to brush your teeth, blow dry your hair, and put on a sufficient number of layers to brave the frigid outdoors.  Ready?

Simple Recipes: Lentils

Sometimes you look in the fridge and all you have left is a bunch of greens, and a few other sundry items.  Last night was the night before my Boston Organics shipment came in so I was running low on pretty much everything save for kale, collards, two heads of romaine, and a bunch of kiwis.  While these would all be great ingredients if I wanted to make a green juice...it really doesn't work for dinner.

Damn you, fluctuating temperature

I'm all for Indian Summers.  This Octoboer/November season has been verging on fantastic - brief instances of cold, followed by unseasonable warm weather.  Unfortunately it's been wreaking havoc on my skin.  The fluctuating ups and downs of this season's temperature and humidity are probably not doing such great things for your skin either.
